Selenium Picolinate and Cardiovascular Disease: Scientific Evidence
Selenium is an essential trace element with antioxidant properties, and its role in cardiovascular health has been the subject of scientific investigation. Selenium picolinate is one of several selenium supplements used to increase selenium status in the body. Epidemiological studies have indicated that regions with low selenium levels in soil and food supply have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including Keshan disease, a cardiomyopathy linked to selenium deficiency. This has led to speculation that selenium supplementation might help prevent or treat CVD in populations with marginal or deficient selenium intake.
However, randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have produced mixed results. Some studies suggest that selenium supplementation may reduce biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, which are related to CVD risk. Despite this, large-scale clinical trials have not consistently demonstrated that selenium supplementation (including selenium picolinate) reduces the incidence of cardiovascular events in the general population. A 2021 Cochrane review concluded that there is low to moderate certainty evidence that selenium supplementation does not significantly reduce the risk of CVD in healthy adults. There is insufficient evidence to recommend selenium supplementation for cardiovascular disease prevention or treatment except in cases of deficiency.
In summary, while there is a scientific rationale based on selenium’s biological functions, robust clinical evidence supporting the use of selenium picolinate for cardiovascular disease is limited. The overall quality of evidence is moderate but not strongly supportive, leading to a rating of 2 out of 5.
