Palmitoleic acid is a monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid found in some plant oils and fish oils. Its use to support or treat cardiovascular disease (CVD) is driven by emerging scientific interest rather than tradition. Several animal and human studies have investigated its metabolic and cardiovascular effects. Some evidence suggests that palmitoleic acid may improve lipid profiles by lowering triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, while raising HDL cholesterol. It has also been proposed to have anti-inflammatory properties and improve insulin sensitivity, which are beneficial in the context of cardiovascular health.
However, the evidence is still relatively limited and preliminary. Most human studies are small, short-term, and show modest benefits at best. A few randomized controlled trials have reported improvements in markers of metabolic syndrome, but robust evidence for a direct reduction in CVD risk or events is lacking. Additionally, palmitoleic acid can be endogenously synthesized from palmitic acid, making supplementation potentially less impactful compared to essential fatty acids.
Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some early data supporting palmitoleic acid’s potential cardiovascular benefits, the quality and quantity of evidence are not yet strong. Larger, long-term clinical trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease. Thus, current scientific support is modest, and it should not replace established therapies.
