Marine lipids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been extensively studied for their effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD). Numerous randomized controlled trials, epidemiological studies, and meta-analyses indicate that marine lipids can lower triglyceride levels, reduce blood pressure, decrease platelet aggregation, and have anti-inflammatory effects—all of which are beneficial for heart health. Early observational studies, such as those of Greenland Inuit populations, linked high fish oil consumption to lower rates of CVD, which spurred clinical research into omega-3 supplementation. The American Heart Association and similar bodies have issued guidelines acknowledging the cardiovascular benefits of marine lipids, particularly for patients with high triglyceride levels or those at risk of heart disease.

However, the overall impact of marine lipids on major cardiovascular events (such as heart attack and stroke) is more nuanced. Some large-scale trials (e.g., GISSI-Prevenzione, REDUCE-IT) have shown significant reductions in cardiovascular events with omega-3 supplementation, especially at higher doses and in specific patient populations. Other trials (e.g., VITAL, ASCEND) have found more modest or no significant benefits in primary prevention. Thus, while there is robust scientific evidence supporting the use of marine lipids for lowering triglycerides and providing some degree of cardiovascular protection, the magnitude of benefit for broad populations remains a subject of ongoing research.
