Macadamia nuts are supported by scientific evidence for their potential benefits in cardiovascular disease prevention and management. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that including macadamia nuts in the diet can have favorable effects on lipid profiles, particularly by lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels, which are established risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The beneficial effects are attributed to the high content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), especially oleic acid and palmitoleic acid, as well as the presence of antioxidants and phytosterols.

Randomized controlled trials, such as those published in Journal of Nutrition (2003) and Lipids (2007), have shown that regular consumption of macadamia nuts (about 40-50 grams per day) can reduce LDL cholesterol and improve the overall lipid profile without causing weight gain. These effects are similar to those observed with other nuts, like almonds and walnuts, which are also associated with cardiovascular benefits. The mechanisms include improved fatty acid profiles, reduced oxidative stress, and anti-inflammatory effects.

However, while the evidence is promising, it is not as robust or extensive as for some other nuts, and long-term outcomes on actual cardiovascular events have not been clearly demonstrated. For this reason, macadamia nuts are rated a 3 on the evidence scale. They can be considered a heart-healthy food when consumed as part of a balanced diet, but should not be viewed as a sole treatment for cardiovascular disease.
