Indian Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia), also known as Chinese cinnamon, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Historically, it has been used to promote cardiovascular and metabolic health, often being prescribed for circulation problems and to ‘warm’ the body. The rationale for its use in cardiovascular disease stems from these traditional applications, as well as its believed effects on blood flow and inflammation.

Modern scientific studies on Cassia cinnamon’s direct effects on cardiovascular disease are limited and mostly preclinical or focused on surrogate markers. Some small studies and meta-analyses suggest cinnamon may help lower blood glucose, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome, which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, these studies often do not distinguish between Cinnamomum cassia and Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon), and the clinical effects are modest and variable. There is little robust clinical evidence that Cassia cinnamon directly prevents or treats cardiovascular disease events in humans.

In summary, the use of Indian Cassia to support cardiovascular health is justified primarily by traditional practices, with some emerging but weak scientific evidence for its impact on cardiovascular risk factors. High-quality clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence base does not strongly support its use for cardiovascular disease at this time.
