Green tea contains polyphenolic compounds, particularly catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which are potent antioxidants. There is a moderate body of scientific evidence supporting the role of green tea and its antioxidants in cardiovascular health. Epidemiological studies have observed associations between higher green tea consumption and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including lower rates of coronary heart disease and stroke. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) indicate that green tea extract may modestly lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and blood pressure in adults, all of which are established risk factors for CVD. The proposed mechanisms include improved endothelial function, reduced oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory effects, and inhibition of LDL oxidation.
However, not all studies show consistent benefits, and the observed effects, while statistically significant, are generally modest. The American Heart Association and other major health organizations acknowledge the potential of green tea as part of a heart-healthy diet, but they do not recommend green tea supplements as a primary treatment for cardiovascular disease. Overall, the use of green tea antioxidants for cardiovascular disease is supported by scientific evidence, but the quality and strength of this evidence is moderate, and more large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm clinically meaningful benefits.
