Ecklonia cava, a type of brown seaweed native to the coasts of Korea and Japan, has gained attention for its potential cardiovascular benefits primarily based on preclinical and a limited number of clinical studies. The seaweed is rich in phlorotannins, a class of polyphenolic compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Experimental studies in animal models and in vitro have demonstrated that Ecklonia cava extracts may help reduce blood pressure, inhibit platelet aggregation, and improve lipid profiles, all of which are relevant to cardiovascular health. Notably, some studies have shown that phlorotannins from Ecklonia cava can inhibit the activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which may contribute to blood pressure reduction.

However, evidence from human clinical trials is limited and often involves small sample sizes or short durations. A few pilot studies have suggested beneficial effects on cholesterol levels and blood pressure, but these findings require confirmation in larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials. Current scientific validation is preliminary, and while the mechanistic rationale is plausible, more robust clinical data are needed before Ecklonia cava can be confidently recommended for cardiovascular disease prevention or treatment. There is little evidence of traditional use specifically for cardiovascular conditions, as its historical use has been more focused on general health and nutrition in East Asian cuisine.
