Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) has traditional use in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia for various ailments, including cardiovascular conditions. More recently, several in vitro and in vivo studies have explored its potential cardiovascular benefits. These effects are mainly attributed to its high content of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and other polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Animal studies suggest that Cornelian Cherry extracts may help reduce blood lipid levels, improve endothelial function, and decrease markers of inflammation and oxidative stress—factors implicated in cardiovascular disease (CVD). For example, some research in rodents has demonstrated reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides with Cornelian Cherry supplementation. Additionally, improvements in vascular reactivity and reductions in blood pressure have been observed in animal models.

However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. The few small studies that exist indicate possible benefits in lowering blood lipids and improving antioxidant status, but the trials are preliminary, with methodological limitations and small sample sizes. No large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials have confirmed clear cardiovascular benefits in humans.

In summary, the use of Cornelian Cherry for cardiovascular disease is supported by preclinical scientific evidence and limited early-phase human studies, but robust clinical validation is lacking. Thus, the scientific evidence base is considered low to moderate (rated 2/5).
