Citrus bioflavonoids, a group of polyphenolic compounds found in citrus fruits, have been studied for their potential cardiovascular benefits. While their use has some basis in tradition—historically, citrus fruits have been associated with general health and prevention of scurvy—modern interest is largely driven by scientific research into their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Bioflavonoids such as hesperidin, naringin, and diosmin are thought to support cardiovascular health by reducing oxidative stress, improving capillary strength, and modulating lipid metabolism.
Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that citrus bioflavonoids can improve endothelial function, inhibit LDL oxidation, and decrease platelet aggregation, all of which are beneficial for cardiovascular health. Some small human clinical trials have shown improvements in blood pressure, blood lipid profiles, and markers of inflammation; for example, hesperidin supplementation has been linked to reductions in blood pressure and improved vascular function in some populations. However, these studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes use bioflavonoid-rich extracts rather than isolated compounds, making it difficult to generalize the findings.
Overall, while there is scientific interest and some positive early evidence, the clinical data supporting the use of citrus bioflavonoids for cardiovascular disease prevention or treatment remains limited and inconclusive. Larger, well-designed human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing. The evidence to date warrants cautious optimism (rating: 2/5), but does not yet support widespread clinical use.
