Citrulline aspartate has some scientific basis for its use in cardiovascular health, though the evidence is still limited and generally preliminary. Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that serves as a precursor to arginine, which in turn is a substrate for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. NO is a vasodilator, meaning it helps relax blood vessels and improve blood flow—an important mechanism in cardiovascular health. Several small clinical studies and experimental trials have investigated citrulline supplementation (often as L-citrulline or citrulline malate, but occasionally as citrulline aspartate) for its potential to improve endothelial function and reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients or individuals with endothelial dysfunction. Some of these studies have shown modest improvements in arterial stiffness and blood pressure, suggesting a beneficial effect.
However, the bulk of research has focused on citrulline or citrulline malate rather than citrulline aspartate specifically, and most studies are small, short-term, and do not examine clinical endpoints like heart attack or stroke. There is little evidence from large, long-term randomized controlled trials supporting its use for preventing or treating cardiovascular disease. Thus, while the biological rationale exists and early findings are promising, the strength of evidence is still limited. Citrulline aspartate is not widely recognized or recommended in clinical guidelines for cardiovascular disease treatment or prevention.
