Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) is supported by scientific evidence for its potential cardiovascular benefits. Multiple clinical studies and experimental research have investigated its effects on cardiovascular risk factors. Chokeberries are rich in polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Human trials have demonstrated that chokeberry supplementation can lead to modest reductions in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and markers of oxidative stress in individuals with metabolic syndrome, hypertension, or at risk for cardiovascular disease.

A randomized, placebo-controlled study published in the journal European Journal of Nutrition (2010) found that daily intake of chokeberry extract significantly decreased blood pressure and improved lipid profiles in patients with metabolic syndrome. Other research has reported improvements in endothelial function and decreased levels of inflammatory markers after chokeberry consumption.

While these results are promising, the overall quality and size of the studies are moderate, and findings are not yet robust enough to support chokeberry as a standalone treatment for cardiovascular disease. Most studies have used extracts or juices in addition to standard therapy. The evidence is stronger for its use as a supplemental dietary aid to help manage cardiovascular risk factors, rather than as a primary intervention. Further large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to establish the efficacy and safety of chokeberry in cardiovascular disease management.
