Evidence supporting the use of: Blueberry
For the health condition: Cardiovascular Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Blueberries have gained scientific attention for their potential benefits in supporting cardiovascular health. The rationale is primarily based on their rich content of polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, which are known to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several epidemiological studies have found an association between higher intake of blueberries (and other berries) and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). For example, a large prospective cohort study published in Circulation (2013) observed that a higher intake of anthocyanin-rich foods like blueberries was linked to a reduced risk of myocardial infarction in young women.
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have provided more direct evidence. Clinical studies have shown that regular consumption of blueberries or blueberry extracts can improve endothelial function, decrease blood pressure, and reduce arterial stiffness in both healthy and at-risk populations. These effects are thought to be mediated through improvements in nitric oxide bioavailability and reductions in oxidative stress and inflammation.
However, while the evidence is promising, it is not yet conclusive. Most clinical trials have been relatively small and of limited duration, and not all have demonstrated significant cardiovascular benefits. As such, blueberries are best viewed as a beneficial dietary component rather than a standalone treatment for CVD. Nonetheless, the cumulative data justify their inclusion in a heart-healthy diet, and ongoing research may further clarify their role in cardiovascular prevention and management.
