Evidence supporting the use of: Bassia scoparia
For the health condition: Cardiovascular Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bassia scoparia (commonly known as Kochia or burning bush) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the seeds of Bassia scoparia (known as "Di Fu Zi") are used primarily for their diuretic properties, to clear damp-heat, and for issues such as urinary tract infections or skin diseases. There is some traditional use suggesting a benefit for edema, which is sometimes related to cardiovascular issues such as heart failure, but there is no strong or direct tradition of using Bassia scoparia specifically to treat or support general cardiovascular disease such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, or coronary artery disease.
Scientific research on Bassia scoparia regarding cardiovascular disease is very limited and largely preclinical. A few laboratory studies have investigated its extracts for potential antioxidant or lipid-lowering effects, but these are not robust or directly relevant to human cardiovascular disease, and no high-quality clinical trials exist. Therefore, while there is a minor traditional precedent for its use in symptoms that can be secondary to cardiovascular disease (like edema), neither the traditional nor scientific evidence robustly supports its use in treating or preventing cardiovascular disease directly.
