Amino acids, particularly specific ones such as L-arginine, taurine, and L-citrulline, have been investigated for their potential benefits in cardiovascular disease (CVD). The scientific basis for their use largely revolves around their roles in vascular function and nitric oxide (NO) production. L-arginine, for example, serves as a substrate for endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), which produces NO—a key molecule in vasodilation and blood pressure regulation. Some clinical studies suggest that L-arginine supplementation can improve endothelial function and lower blood pressure in certain populations. Taurine has also demonstrated blood pressure-lowering effects in small trials, possibly due to its influence on calcium handling and sympathetic nervous system activity. L-citrulline, which is converted to L-arginine in the body, may similarly support NO production and vascular health.
However, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate. While some positive effects are noted in smaller or short-term studies, large-scale, long-term clinical trials have not consistently demonstrated substantial cardiovascular benefits from amino acid supplementation. Additionally, the effects can vary depending on the specific amino acid, patient population, and underlying health conditions. The use of amino acids for CVD is therefore scientifically justified to a moderate extent, with some mechanistic and clinical support, but it is not considered a mainstream or stand-alone therapy. More robust research is needed to establish definitive recommendations.
