Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian mallow (Abutilon indicum) has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional systems of medicine in India for the treatment of carbuncles, boils, and other skin infections. The leaves and roots are often applied as poultices directly to the affected skin to help reduce inflammation and promote healing. This practice is documented in several ethnobotanical and Ayurvedic sources, which attribute anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties to the plant. However, most of the support for this use is anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific studies.

A few laboratory studies have indicated that extracts of Abutilon indicum possess antibacterial activity against pathogens that commonly infect skin wounds, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Some animal studies also suggest wound healing properties, but these are preliminary and do not specifically address carbuncles in clinical settings. As such, while the traditional use is well-established, the scientific evidence remains limited and not sufficient for strong clinical recommendations. The evidence rating is therefore moderate based on the consistency of traditional use and limited but suggestive preclinical data.
