Fragrant Angelica (Angelica dahurica), known as "Bai Zhi" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for various skin conditions, including carbuncles. In TCM, Bai Zhi is believed to dispel wind, drain pus, reduce swelling, and alleviate pain. Carbuncles—clusters of boils caused by bacterial infection—are traditionally managed by promoting the discharge of pus and reducing inflammation, actions Bai Zhi is thought to support. Texts such as the "Shennong Ben Cao Jing" and later materia medica, including the "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao Gangmu), describe the use of Bai Zhi for the treatment of sores, abscesses, and other purulent skin conditions. However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Angelica dahurica may possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to carbuncles or supported by robust clinical trials. The primary evidence for its use remains rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific research. Thus, while Fragrant Angelica is a recognized herbal remedy for carbuncles in TCM, its efficacy is mainly supported by historical and empirical use rather than high-quality scientific studies.
