Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema (commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or Cobra lily) is a genus widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) under the name Tian Nan Xing (primarily Arisaema erubescens and related species). In TCM, the processed tuber of Arisaema is believed to disperse phlegm, resolve masses, and reduce swelling, and has historically been used for various inflammatory skin conditions, including carbuncles, abscesses, and boils. The rationale for its use is rooted in TCM theory rather than biomedical science, with the herb often prescribed in complex formulas in combination with other ingredients.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating carbuncles specifically. Some laboratory studies have suggested anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in extracts from Arisaema species, but these studies are preliminary and not specific to carbuncle treatment. No high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies have confirmed its efficacy or safety for this indication. Therefore, while the use of Arisaema for carbuncles is justified by a long history of traditional use, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence rating is low.
