Citrus bioflavonoids, a group of plant compounds found in citrus fruits, have traditionally been used and are scientifically studied for their effects on capillary health. The primary bioflavonoids in this group include hesperidin, rutin, and diosmin. Scientific research suggests that these compounds help strengthen capillary walls, reduce capillary permeability, and decrease fragility, potentially benefiting conditions characterized by capillary weakness such as chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and easy bruising. Several clinical studies, particularly from Europe, have examined the effects of diosmin and hesperidin on vascular health. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that supplemental diosmin/hesperidin combinations can reduce symptoms such as leg swelling and improve capillary resistance in patients with venous insufficiency. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, inhibition of inflammatory mediators, and enhancement of vascular smooth muscle tone. Rutin, another citrus bioflavonoid, has also been studied for its ability to reduce capillary fragility and permeability, especially in people with conditions like hemorrhoids or bleeding disorders. Most authoritative bodies consider the evidence to be suggestive but not definitive, and more large-scale, well-designed studies are needed to confirm efficacy. Nonetheless, the scientific rationale for using citrus bioflavonoids to support capillary strength is grounded in both experimental and clinical research.
