Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Greater Periwinkle (Vinca major) has a history of traditional use, particularly in European herbal medicine, for supporting the health of blood vessels and capillaries. Historically, preparations from the leaves and aerial parts were used to address issues such as minor bleeding, nosebleeds, and to generally "strengthen" blood vessel walls. The rationale for its traditional use lies in its content of vincamine and related alkaloids, which were believed to have vasodilatory and circulatory benefits.

However, while its close relative Vinca minor and vincamine (an isolated alkaloid) have been studied for their effects on cerebral blood flow and microcirculation, robust modern scientific validation specifically for Vinca major and its effects on capillaries throughout the body is lacking. Most clinical and pharmacological studies focus on isolated compounds rather than whole herb extracts, and evidence for the direct benefit to capillaries outside the brain is mixed and limited.

In summary, while the use of Greater Periwinkle for supporting the capillary system is grounded in tradition, current scientific evidence is insufficient to strongly support these traditional claims. Its main validation remains anecdotal and historical rather than evidence-based.
