Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavones are a subclass of flavonoids, a group of polyphenolic compounds widely found in fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants. Scientific research supports their use for supporting capillary health, primarily due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vascular-protective properties. Several studies have shown that flavones such as diosmin, hesperidin, and apigenin can help strengthen capillary walls, reduce capillary permeability, and improve microcirculation. For instance, diosmin and hesperidin are routinely used in Europe to manage chronic venous insufficiency and related vascular disorders, including capillary fragility and varicose veins.

Clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that these flavones can decrease symptoms such as leg swelling, heaviness, and cramps, likely by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in capillary endothelial cells. Mechanistically, flavones inhibit the breakdown of capillary walls by scavenging free radicals and modulating inflammatory mediators. However, most of the evidence is focused on certain specific flavones, and efficacy may vary among different compounds in this class. While the evidence is not overwhelmingly strong across all flavones and all populations, a moderate scientific basis exists for using certain flavones to support capillary health.
