Evidence supporting the use of: Diosmetin
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Diosmetin is a flavonoid aglycone primarily derived from the hydrolysis of diosmin, a compound found in citrus fruits. Diosmin and its metabolite diosmetin have been studied for their effects on vascular health, particularly in supporting capillary function and integrity. Several clinical trials and experimental studies have demonstrated that diosmin (and by extension diosmetin) can enhance venous tone, decrease capillary permeability, and improve lymphatic drainage. These actions are attributed to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasoprotective properties. Diosmetin has been shown to reduce the fragility and leakage of capillaries, which is relevant in conditions such as chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoidal disease. However, most of the robust clinical evidence is centered on diosmin, with diosmetin being its active metabolite. Direct research on isolated diosmetin is more limited, but its biochemical similarity and role as a metabolite provide scientific rationale for its efficacy. Overall, the use of diosmetin to support the capillary system is justified by a moderate level of scientific evidence, though more human studies focusing specifically on diosmetin would further strengthen this support.
