Evidence supporting the use of: Delphinidin
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Delphinidin is an anthocyanidin, a type of flavonoid pigment found in various berries, grapes, and some vegetables. It has been studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests that delphinidin and related anthocyanins may positively impact vascular health, including the support of capillary integrity and function. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that delphinidin can reduce oxidative stress on endothelial cells (which line blood vessels and capillaries) and may help maintain the strength and flexibility of blood vessel walls by inhibiting enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix.
Some small-scale human studies on anthocyanin-rich diets (not isolated delphinidin) suggest improvements in vascular function, such as enhanced endothelial-dependent vasodilation and reduced markers of vascular inflammation. However, direct clinical evidence specifically linking delphinidin to improved capillary health in humans is limited, and most data are extrapolated from broader research on mixed anthocyanin consumption. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting delphinidin's benefit for the capillary system, the evidence is not strong or specific enough to warrant a high rating.
In summary, delphinidin is scientifically plausible for supporting capillary health based on mechanistic and some experimental data, but direct, robust clinical validation in humans is lacking.
