Evidence supporting the use of: Danshen
For the body system: Capillaries
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has been widely used to support cardiovascular health, including the microcirculation and capillary function. Modern research provides scientific validation for some of its traditional uses, particularly in improving blood flow and protecting vascular endothelial cells. Several studies have demonstrated that the active compounds in Danshen, such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids, exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory effects. These actions can help maintain capillary integrity and support microcirculation. Clinical studies and meta-analyses have shown that Danshen and its extracts can improve symptoms in conditions related to impaired capillary function, such as diabetic microangiopathy, by reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory markers. However, while there is promising evidence from both in vitro and clinical studies, most research has been conducted in China, and large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials are still somewhat limited. Thus, the evidence for Danshen’s support of the capillary system is considered moderate but not conclusive, meriting a rating of 3 out of 5.
