Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Citrus spp. (including species such as Citrus sinensis, Citrus limon, and Citrus aurantium) are used to support capillary health primarily due to their content of bioflavonoids, particularly hesperidin and diosmin. Scientific studies have shown that these citrus-derived flavonoids can help strengthen capillary walls, decrease capillary permeability, and reduce inflammation. Clinical trials, especially those focusing on chronic venous insufficiency and related vascular conditions, have demonstrated that supplementation with diosmin and hesperidin (often derived from citrus peels) can reduce symptoms such as leg swelling, heaviness, and capillary fragility. The mechanism is thought to involve antioxidant activity and improved venous tone, as well as modulation of inflammatory mediators. While most evidence pertains to extracts standardized for specific flavonoids rather than whole fruit, the connection between citrus flavonoids and capillary health is supported by multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. However, the direct effect of consuming whole citrus fruits on capillary health is less well-studied, and the evidence base is stronger for concentrated flavonoid extracts. Overall, Citrus spp. has a moderate level of scientific validation for supporting the capillary system, particularly when standardized extracts are used.
