Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Asiaticoside is a triterpenoid saponin compound isolated from Centella asiatica, a plant traditionally used in Asian medicine. There is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting its use for capillary and microvascular health. Preclinical studies have shown that asiaticoside can promote collagen synthesis, strengthen vascular connective tissue, and enhance wound healing. These effects are believed to help improve capillary integrity and reduce capillary permeability, which can be beneficial in conditions like chronic venous insufficiency and microangiopathy.

Clinical data are limited but promising. Several small-scale human studies and meta-analyses of Centella asiatica extracts (which contain asiaticoside among other compounds) have reported improvements in symptoms such as edema and capillary fragility, likely due to effects on the extracellular matrix and vascular endothelial cells. However, most studies use plant extracts rather than purified asiaticoside, making it challenging to attribute the benefits solely to asiaticoside. Safety profiles are generally favorable.

In summary, the use of asiaticoside to support the capillaries is justified by both traditional use of the plant and a moderate but growing body of scientific research, particularly regarding its role in microvascular protection and connective tissue support. More large-scale, high-quality human trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and specific mechanisms.
