Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vodka has been used as a traditional home remedy for canker sores, primarily due to its alcohol content, which may act as a local antiseptic and astringent. The use involves dabbing a small amount of vodka onto the sore with a cotton swab, with the intent of reducing bacterial load and possibly numbing the area to decrease pain. However, there is very limited scientific evidence supporting the efficacy or safety of vodka (or any high-proof alcohol) for this purpose. Most medical sources do not recommend alcohol for canker sores, as it can irritate the mucosal lining and potentially worsen pain or delay healing. The practice seems to stem from broader folk traditions of applying spirits to wounds as a disinfectant, rather than from clinical studies specific to oral ulcers. There are no well-designed clinical trials or systematic reviews that validate vodka's effectiveness for canker sores. In fact, medical professionals often recommend avoiding alcohol-based mouthwashes for oral lesions. Therefore, while vodka's use has roots in tradition, the evidence supporting its benefit is very weak and mostly anecdotal.
