Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

"Pungent principles" is a term historically used to describe the active, often spicy or acrid, constituents in certain herbs and spices, such as those found in ginger, garlic, mustard, and pepper. In traditional systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these pungent substances have been used for their warming, stimulating, and antimicrobial properties. When it comes to canker sores (aphthous ulcers), traditional remedies have occasionally employed pungent herbs to promote healing or reduce infection risk. For example, some folk remedies advocate rinsing the mouth with diluted ginger or clove extracts, which are believed to have antiseptic and mild analgesic effects. However, the evidence supporting the efficacy of pungent principles for treating canker sores is largely anecdotal and based on traditional use. There are limited scientific studies specifically evaluating the use of pungent compounds for this condition. While some in vitro studies suggest that certain pungent phytochemicals possess antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, direct clinical evidence for their benefit in canker sores is lacking. Moreover, some pungent substances may actually irritate oral mucosa and could potentially worsen symptoms in sensitive individuals. Therefore, while there is a historical precedent for the use of pungent principles in oral health, the quality and quantity of supporting evidence for canker sores is low.
