Sulfated polysaccharides, especially those derived from marine sources such as seaweeds (e.g., fucoidan, carrageenan, and ulvan), have been studied for their potential roles in supporting cancer treatment, mainly by reducing side effects of chemotherapy and enhancing immune function. Scientific evidence supporting their use is emerging but remains preliminary and mostly limited to in vitro studies, animal models, and small-scale human trials.

Some studies suggest sulfated polysaccharides may exert immunomodulatory effects, improving white blood cell counts and reducing inflammation. For example, fucoidan has demonstrated the ability to stimulate immune cells such as natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, which could theoretically help patients maintain immune function during chemotherapy. Additionally, limited clinical trials have explored fucoidan supplementation in cancer patients, suggesting possible improvements in quality of life and reductions in adverse effects like fatigue and gastrointestinal symptoms. However, these studies are small and often lack rigorous controls.

There is also interest in the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of sulfated polysaccharides, which may help mitigate some damaging effects of conventional cancer therapies. However, major clinical guidelines do not currently endorse sulfated polysaccharides as a standard adjunct in cancer care due to insufficient large-scale, high-quality human trials. In summary, while the use of sulfated polysaccharides for reducing cancer treatment side effects is supported by some early scientific evidence, the overall quality and quantity of the research are limited, and more robust clinical studies are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety.
