Boswellic acid, derived from the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree (frankincense), has been investigated for its potential anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Its use as an adjunct in cancer treatment, particularly to reduce side effects, is supported by some scientific studies, though evidence remains limited and preliminary.
Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that boswellic acids can inhibit pro-inflammatory pathways, such as 5-lipoxygenase, and may induce apoptosis in certain cancer cell lines. These properties suggest a potential to alleviate inflammation-associated cancer symptoms and possibly improve patients’ quality of life.
Clinically, a few small trials have examined boswellic acid extracts in patients undergoing cancer treatment. Most notably, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Kirste et al., 2011) showed that Boswellia serrata extract reduced cerebral edema (brain swelling) and associated neurological symptoms in patients with brain tumors receiving radiotherapy. Other studies have explored its role in reducing chemotherapy-induced side effects, such as mucositis, but evidence is sparse and not yet conclusive.
Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some early clinical evidence for boswellic acid’s supportive use in cancer care—primarily for managing inflammation and edema—large, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Thus, its use is still considered experimental, and it should not replace standard therapies. Patients should consult their healthcare providers before using boswellic acid supplements.
