Apigenin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various fruits, vegetables, and herbs such as parsley and chamomile. Its use in cancer treatment is primarily supported by preclinical (cell and animal) studies rather than long-standing traditional practices or robust clinical trials. Scientific research has demonstrated that apigenin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-proliferative properties, which may help inhibit cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in various cancer cell lines. Some studies also suggest it may enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy agents and potentially reduce their side effects by mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation.
However, the evidence supporting apigenin’s use to specifically reduce side effects of cancer treatments in humans is limited. Most of the supportive data come from laboratory and animal studies, with only a few early-phase clinical investigations. These suggest potential benefits, such as protecting normal tissues from chemotherapy-induced toxicity (e.g., reducing oxidative damage), but these findings have not yet translated into strong recommendations for its use in clinical oncology. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary data, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking, and apigenin is not currently a standard adjunct in cancer therapy.
