Lithothamnion is a genus of red marine algae known for its high mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium. It is used in dietary supplements as a natural source of calcium, especially for those seeking plant-based or vegan alternatives to traditional calcium supplements derived from dairy or rocks (e.g., calcium carbonate). The use of Lithothamnion for supporting or treating calcium deficiency has a scientific basis: several studies have demonstrated that its calcium is bioavailable, meaning it can be efficiently absorbed and utilized by the human body. For example, a randomized controlled trial by Walsh et al. (2015) found that calcium derived from Lithothamnion was as effective as calcium carbonate in maintaining bone health markers in postmenopausal women.
