Silver, particularly in the form of silver sulfadiazine cream (an FDA-approved product), is widely used for the treatment and prevention of infections in burns and scalds. The scientific rationale is based on silver's broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, which help prevent colonization and infection of damaged skin. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of silver-containing dressings and creams in reducing wound infections and promoting healing in burn patients. Silver ions disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit DNA replication, rendering them effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some resistant strains.

The use of silver in burn care is well-established in modern medicine and is recommended in various clinical guidelines. Silver sulfadiazine has been a standard topical therapy since the 1960s, supported by randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews.
