Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic, water-soluble polymer widely used in medical and pharmaceutical applications, including as a component in wound dressings for burns and scalds. Scientific evidence supports its use primarily as a structural and hydrating agent in hydrogel dressings. PVA-based hydrogels provide a moist wound environment, which is well documented to promote healing, reduce pain, and decrease infection risk in partial-thickness burns. These dressings are non-adherent, minimizing trauma during dressing changes, and can be loaded with antimicrobial agents for enhanced therapeutic effects.
Several in vitro and animal studies, as well as some clinical reports, have shown that PVA hydrogels maintain hydration and support tissue regeneration. However, when rated against gold-standard randomized controlled trials, the evidence is moderate (level 3/5) due to limited large-scale clinical studies directly comparing PVA dressings with other advanced wound care products. Nonetheless, PVA hydrogels are recognized in medical literature and practice guidelines as suitable for superficial and partial-thickness burns, justifying their continued use. Their biocompatibility, permeability to oxygen, and ability to be sterilized further contribute to their appropriateness for burn care.
