Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Tetrahydropalmatine (THP) is an isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from several plants in the genus Corydalis, commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Historically, Corydalis extracts have been applied for their analgesic and sedative properties, as well as for promoting blood circulation and alleviating pain due to blood stasis—a concept in TCM often associated with bruising. While THP itself is not specifically singled out in classical texts for bruise prevention, whole Corydalis tubers have been used in herbal formulas intended to reduce swelling and bruising after injuries. There is, however, minimal modern scientific evidence directly linking THP or Corydalis extracts to the prevention or treatment of bruises. Most contemporary research on THP focuses on its neurological and analgesic effects, rather than its impact on hematoma formation or resolution. Thus, the use of THP for bruises is primarily grounded in traditional practice, rather than supported by robust clinical or pharmacological data.
