For the health condition: Bruises (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sichuan Teasel (Dipsacus asper), known as "Xu Duan" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is traditionally used to support the healing of bruises, bone fractures, and trauma. The use of Sichuan Teasel for bruises is primarily rooted in TCM, where the herb is believed to "tonify the liver and kidneys," "strengthen bones and sinews," and "promote blood circulation while stopping bleeding." It is commonly included in herbal formulas for trauma, contusions, and joint injuries. Historical TCM texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing, describe its application for these purposes.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Sichuan Teasel for bruise prevention or treatment is limited. Modern pharmacological studies have identified some anti-inflammatory and osteoprotective effects in animal models and in vitro experiments, but these are not specific to bruises nor are they conclusive in humans. Most scientific studies focus on bone health or joint function rather than soft tissue injury like bruising. Thus, while traditional use is well-established and underpins its application for bruises, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking.
