Shen-chu (also known as Shenqu or Massa Fermentata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal ingredient composed of fermented wheat flour and various herbs. Its primary historical use has been as a digestive aid rather than a direct treatment for bruises or injury-related conditions. However, some traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations include Shen-chu in herbal blends intended to promote circulation and reduce stasis, which is considered important in the prevention and healing of bruises within TCM theory. The rationale is that by supporting the spleen and stomach, overall blood movement and tissue repair are optimized, indirectly helping to prevent or ameliorate bruising. There is, however, scant direct historical documentation specifically linking Shen-chu to bruise prevention as a standalone remedy; its use is more often as an adjunct in complex formulas.

Currently, there is very limited (if any) scientific research validating Shen-chu’s efficacy for bruise prevention or treatment. Most available studies focus on its digestive effects, such as improving appetite and gastrointestinal function. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly support its role in bruise prevention. Thus, while its use is primarily justified by tradition within certain herbal combinations, the strength of evidence for Shen-chu’s effect on bruises is weak, reflected in a low evidence score.
