Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Their use in supporting or preventing bruises has some scientific backing, though evidence is moderate rather than strong. Flavonoids such as diosmin, hesperidin, and rutin are thought to strengthen capillaries and improve vascular integrity, potentially reducing capillary fragility that can lead to bruising. Several clinical studies, particularly with mixed flavonoid preparations (often combined with vitamin C or other compounds), have demonstrated benefits in reducing capillary permeability and improving symptoms related to vascular fragility, including bruising and edema.

For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that flavonoid mixtures can reduce symptoms in chronic venous insufficiency and minor hematomas, and some studies support the use of topical or oral flavonoids in reducing the size and severity of bruises after minor injuries or cosmetic procedures. However, many trials are small and heterogeneous in design, and not all have focused specifically on bruise prevention in healthy individuals. Systematic reviews often conclude that while there is promise, more robust, high-quality research is needed to make definitive recommendations. Overall, the evidence suggests a plausible benefit, especially in individuals prone to easy bruising, but does not yet reach the highest level of scientific validation.
