Cinnamomum tamala (Indian bay leaf) is traditionally used in Ayurveda and other South Asian folk medicine systems to support respiratory health, including the management of bronchitis. The historical use is rooted in its reputed expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Classical Ayurvedic texts mention C. tamala as an ingredient in formulations for cough, respiratory congestion, and bronchitis-like symptoms. The leaves are often used in decoctions or as part of polyherbal remedies to help relieve cough, ease breathing, and reduce throat inflammation.
Scientific studies on the direct efficacy of C. tamala specifically for bronchitis are limited. Some laboratory research has demonstrated that extracts of C. tamala possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically be beneficial in infections or inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract. However, robust clinical trials in humans for bronchitis are lacking. The traditional evidence is thus supported by limited in vitro and animal studies but not by human clinical data. The primary justification for its use in bronchitis remains traditional, with a moderate level of pharmacological rationale but a lack of direct scientific validation.
