Petasin is a biologically active compound found in the plant Petasites hybridus, commonly known as butterbur. Its use for supporting the bronchial system, especially in the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis, is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence. Clinical studies have demonstrated that butterbur extracts containing petasin can help reduce symptoms of bronchial inflammation, likely due to petasin’s anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties. For instance, randomized controlled trials have shown butterbur to be as effective as antihistamines in reducing symptoms of allergic rhinitis, which often affects the bronchial passages. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of leukotriene synthesis and reduction of smooth muscle spasms in the airways.

In addition, petasin and related compounds have been shown in laboratory and animal studies to inhibit inflammatory mediators involved in bronchial constriction and hypersensitivity. A meta-analysis published in Phytotherapy Research (2011) concluded that butterbur extracts have a moderate effect in decreasing asthma symptoms and frequency of attacks, further supporting its use for the bronchial system. However, it is important to note that some butterbur preparations may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are hepatotoxic, so only PA-free extracts should be used. Overall, the evidence is not as robust as for some pharmaceutical interventions, but is considerably stronger than for many traditional herbal remedies.
