Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garrya, particularly Garrya elliptica (commonly known as silk tassel), has a history of traditional use among Native American tribes and herbalists for addressing respiratory complaints such as coughs and bronchial irritation. The plant’s leaves and bark have been prepared as teas or tinctures, often employed to help soothe spasmodic coughs and bronchial discomfort. Ethnobotanical records indicate that its use was regionally specific and sometimes extended to other symptoms such as gastrointestinal cramps, due to its reputed antispasmodic properties.

However, scientific studies on Garrya’s effects on the bronchial system are very limited. Some phytochemical analyses have identified alkaloids and other compounds in Garrya species, but there is little to no formal clinical research validating its efficacy for bronchial support. Most references to its use in respiratory conditions derive from traditional herbal texts and ethnobotanical surveys rather than controlled studies.

Therefore, while there is a tradition behind using Garrya for bronchial support, current evidence is primarily anecdotal or historical rather than supported by rigorous modern science. As such, its traditional use can be acknowledged, but the strength of the evidence is modest.
