Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

European Elder (Sambucus nigra) has a long history of traditional use in Europe for supporting respiratory health, particularly the bronchial system. Modern scientific research offers some support for these traditional claims. Elderberries and elderflowers contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (notably quercetin and rutin) and anthocyanins, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties in laboratory studies.

Several clinical studies have investigated elderberry extracts for their effects on respiratory infections, especially influenza and the common cold. For example, a 2019 meta-analysis published in Complementary Therapies in Medicine concluded that elderberry supplementation could reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory symptoms in influenza cases. While not all studies isolate the effects specifically to the bronchial system, the reduction in symptoms like cough and congestion suggests benefits for bronchial comfort and function.

However, it is important to note that while the evidence base is growing, most studies are small, short-term, or focus on elderberry syrup rather than whole plant preparations. There is a need for larger, high-quality clinical trials to definitively confirm these effects. Nonetheless, the combination of traditional use and preliminary scientific data justifies a moderate rating for elder’s support of the bronchial system.
