Cineole, also known as eucalyptol, is a monoterpene found in eucalyptus oil and other plant essential oils. Its use to support the bronchial (respiratory) system is supported by scientific evidence. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated cineole’s efficacy as a mucolytic and anti-inflammatory agent in the airways. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that cineole, when administered orally, can improve lung function and reduce exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Mechanistically, cineole acts by decreasing airway inflammation, reducing mucus production, and improving mucociliary clearance. These effects are attributed to its ability to inhibit cytokine production and modulate the activity of inflammatory cells in the respiratory tract.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses support the use of cineole as an adjunctive therapy for bronchitis, COPD, and asthma, noting statistically significant improvements in symptoms such as cough and dyspnea. The German Commission E (a regulatory body for herbal medicines) has also approved cineole-containing preparations for respiratory conditions, further validating its use. Overall, the evidence base is robust, particularly for mild-to-moderate airway diseases, though cineole should not replace standard medical therapy in severe cases.
