Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) essential oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia, for supporting the respiratory or bronchial system. Traditionally, cajeput oil has been inhaled or applied externally to the chest to help with symptoms of colds, coughs, bronchitis, and other respiratory ailments. The warming and pungent aroma was believed to help clear congestion and ease breathing.
While there is some laboratory evidence that cajeput oil possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, the direct scientific validation for its effectiveness in supporting the bronchial system in humans is limited. Most of the support comes from historical and ethnobotanical accounts rather than rigorous clinical trials. Its main constituent, 1,8-cineole (also found in eucalyptus oil), has some research supporting its role in respiratory health, but cajeput oil itself has not been as extensively studied. Therefore, its use for bronchial support is justified primarily by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence, earning it a moderate evidence score.
