Clinical studies have demonstrated that individuals with low vitamin D levels experience delayed fracture healing and may be at increased risk for complications, such as non-union of bones. Supplementation with vitamin D, often alongside calcium, is commonly recommended in patients with fractures, especially among older adults or those at risk for deficiency.

A 2017 systematic review published in Medicine concluded that vitamin D supplementation may improve fracture healing in patients who are deficient. Additionally, guidelines from organizations like the National Osteoporosis Foundation and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommend ensuring adequate vitamin D status in patients with bone injuries. While vitamin D itself does not directly "heal" broken bones, it provides essential support for the physiological processes required for bone repair. Therefore, its use in the context of broken bones is supported by robust scientific evidence, although the benefit is most pronounced in those who are deficient at baseline.
