For the health condition: Broken Bones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Antler, particularly deer antler, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries to support bone health, including the treatment of broken bones and conditions like osteoporosis. The historical rationale for its use is based on the TCM principle of "like treats like," where animal bones or substances thought to be associated with strength and growth are used to treat similar issues in humans. Antler is believed to tonify the kidney and liver, organs considered important for bone health in TCM. Ancient texts such as the Bencao Gangmu mention antler for strengthening bones and aiding recovery from fractures.
From a scientific standpoint, some laboratory studies have identified bioactive compounds in antler, such as growth factors (IGF-1, TGF-β), minerals, and collagen, which could theoretically aid bone repair. However, evidence from human clinical trials is extremely limited, and no high-quality studies have conclusively shown that antler supplementation speeds bone healing or improves outcomes after a fracture. Thus, the use of antler for broken bones is primarily justified by tradition, not rigorous scientific validation.
