Fibrocystic breast changes are non-cancerous conditions characterized by lumpy, sometimes painful breasts, often related to hormonal fluctuations. Some studies suggest an association between iodine deficiency and the development of FBC. Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis, but it also appears to play a role in breast tissue health. Observational data indicates that populations with higher dietary iodine intake (such as Japanese women) have a lower incidence of FBC and possibly breast cancer.
