Evidence supporting the use of: Isothiocyanates
For the body system: Brain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Isothiocyanates are a group of compounds primarily found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. The most extensively studied isothiocyanate is sulforaphane. Scientific research has increasingly examined the potential neuroprotective effects of isothiocyanates, particularly in the context of oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Preclinical studies have demonstrated that isothiocyanates can activate the Nrf2 pathway, a key regulator of antioxidant defense mechanisms in the brain. By enhancing cellular antioxidant capacity, these compounds may protect neurons from damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Some animal studies have also shown that isothiocyanates can reduce neuroinflammation and improve cognitive performance in models of neurodegeneration.
While human clinical data are more limited, small-scale trials and epidemiological studies have suggested that higher intake of cruciferous vegetables is associated with better cognitive function and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. However, direct evidence linking isolated isothiocyanate supplementation to brain health outcomes in humans remains insufficient. Therefore, while the mechanistic and preclinical evidence is promising, more rigorous human research is needed before strong conclusions can be drawn. The current rating reflects moderate evidence based on laboratory and animal studies, with emerging but not yet robust support from human data.
