Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate (often known by the brand name Nitrosigine) is marketed as a dietary supplement that may benefit bodybuilders by enhancing exercise performance, increasing nitric oxide production, and improving blood flow. The evidence supporting its use is primarily scientific, though it is relatively limited and mostly derives from small-scale, industry-funded studies.

The main proposed mechanism is that arginine, an amino acid, acts as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a compound that dilates blood vessels and may improve nutrient delivery to muscles during exercise. Silicate and inositol are thought to enhance the bioavailability and stability of arginine, possibly leading to greater and longer-lasting increases in plasma arginine and NO levels compared to arginine alone.

A handful of human studies—mostly randomized, placebo-controlled trials—have shown that inositol-stabilized arginine silicate can increase plasma arginine and NO markers and may improve measures of muscle pump, perceived energy, and some aspects of cognitive function during exercise. Some studies report modest improvements in exercise performance measures (such as muscle endurance and recovery) after supplementation. However, these studies tend to be short-duration, involve relatively small participant groups, and are often sponsored by product manufacturers.

Overall, while there is emerging scientific support for the use of inositol-stabilized arginine silicate in bodybuilding and exercise performance contexts, the quality and quantity of evidence is moderate at best, and larger, independent studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
