Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Deer velvet, which refers to the soft, cartilaginous tissue that covers the growing antlers of deer, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Its applications have included general vitality, immune support, and enhancement of physical strength and endurance. In the context of bodybuilding, most of its use is justified by traditional claims rather than robust scientific evidence. Proponents believe that deer velvet may improve muscle strength, recovery, and stamina due to its purported content of growth factors and various hormones, including IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1). However, the scientific literature supporting these claims is limited and generally of low quality. Most studies are small, lack rigorous controls, or are conducted on animals rather than humans. Systematic reviews and position statements from sports and medical authorities generally conclude there is insufficient evidence to support the use of deer velvet for enhancing muscle mass or performance in bodybuilding. Thus, while deer velvet is traditionally used to support physical performance, there is minimal scientific validation for its effectiveness in bodybuilding or muscle growth.
