Evidence supporting the use of: Arginine alpha ketoglutarate
For the health condition: Body Building
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate (AAKG) is a popular supplement among bodybuilders, primarily marketed for its potential to enhance nitric oxide production, increase blood flow, and promote muscle growth and recovery. The rationale behind its use stems from the fact that L-arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule that causes vasodilation and theoretically could improve delivery of nutrients and oxygen to muscles during exercise.
However, scientific evidence supporting AAKG’s effectiveness for bodybuilding is weak. Several small studies have investigated L-arginine and AAKG supplementation in athletes. Most have shown little to no improvement in muscle strength, endurance, or hypertrophy compared to placebo. For example, a 2012 systematic review in the journal Nutrition found inconsistent evidence for arginine supplementation improving exercise performance or muscle growth. Some studies did show a modest increase in nitric oxide levels, but this did not consistently translate to meaningful performance benefits.
Overall, while AAKG is widely used in the bodybuilding community and present in many pre-workout formulas, its use is supported by limited scientific data. The evidence quality is low, and most reputable sources, including position stands from sports nutrition organizations, do not recommend AAKG as a proven ergogenic aid for muscle building or strength enhancement.
